WEST JEFFERSON - A furious second-half comeback by the Buckin’ Elks came up seven-points short in Ashe County.
Trailing 28-7 at the intermission, Elkin scored the first 13 points in the second and gave the Huskies all they could handle before surrendering a first down in the closing seconds of the game to fall 42-34.
Quarterback Josh Strickland bounced back from three first-half turnovers with four scores in the second half - two to electrifying wideout Jamiles “Chunky” Hayes - and two more on the ground. Seth Creed rounded out the scoring for the Elks.
Elkin falls to 2-2 on the season and drops their conference record to 1-1.
In Ronda, Starmount dropped East Wilkes 26-3 for their 35th-straight Mountain Valley Conference victory.
The Rams improve to 4-0 on the year, while the Cards fall to 0-4.
