Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there for Elkin High School.

Beth Felts, career and technical teacher at Elkin High School, was awarded a $1,500 grant from State Farm titled Good Neighbor Grant. The grant will allow Felts’ project management students to write and publish a character-education book for Elkin Elementary School’s third graders.

“High school students in a project management class will be writing five short stories compiled into one book,” Felts said. “The students will all come up for the titles of the stories, the characters, and the writing. The students will have their name as published authors and illustrators of the book.”

Every student in third grade will receive a copy of the book, copies of the book will be given to all second and third grade teachers to keep in their classrooms, and copies of the book will be placed in the media center for other students to check out.

“The thing that I really love about Ms. Felts is that she really has student ownership in these projects, and she is combining with outside agencies and helping kids to see beyond the classroom and a textbook,” Superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe said. “She is doing live projects which mean so much.”
