A woman was walking her dog Sunday on Old Virginia Road in Elkin when a large black dog bit her, according to an Elkin Police Report.

She picked up her dog when the larger dog came out as she passed the house. The larger dog, which the report described as having “long black hair,” then started biting her left leg, half way up her calf, according to the report.

Officers talked to the dog owners, who said the dog always gets loose when it rains, the report said. The dog has a pen it stays in as well as a leash attached to a tree, according to the report.

The dog owners told officers the dog received his last rabies shot in April 2011, and the dog had not been taken to the vet in a year and a half, according to the report.

The dog was taken into quarantine for 10 days by animal control.

Animal Control Director Gary Brown took the dog and told the owners if the dog did not show any symptoms after 10 days, the dog would be released to the owners and a vaccination date would be set.

The dog owners were charged with a leash law violation, which states that the animal has to be contained to their property and maintain control of your animal, and have to pay the medical costs for the woman’s bite injuries.
