Cardinals, Elks round out top five of Wells Fargo Cup Standings

ELKIN - With the fall seasons in the book, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the first Wells Fargo Cup standings for the Mountain Valley Conference for 2012-13.

After capturing conference crowns in boys soccer and girls cross country, as well as a second-place finish in girls golf, Ashe County sits atop the standings after the fall with 42.5 team points.

Wilkes Central (39.5 points) is second with a conference title in football and a second-place performance in girls tennis. Forbush sits in third place courtesy of second-place finishes in boys soccer and girls cross country with 38.5 points.

After 2A schools littered the top of the standings, 1A powers East Wilkes and Elkin round out the top five.

The Cardinals (35 points) captured a conference title in girls tennis and boys cross country to move up to fourth place, while strong showings in girls cross country, boys soccer and football put the Buckin’ Elks in fifth with 33 team points.

West Wilkes, Starmount, Alleghany and North Wilkes round out the Wells Fargo Cup standings.
