An after-school arts program is being offered through the Foothills Arts Council and is expected to stimulate the imagination of children, say organizers.

The program was made possible by a grant from the Yadkin Valley United Fund.

The fee for each class is $30 for a six-week session, reflecting a part-scholarship for each student. Full scholarships are also available.

“We have a great team of non-profits who apply for funding…and they specify in each application what our allocation would be dedicated for,” said Missy Loving, executive director of the Yadkin Valley United Fund. “This grant gives the kids an opportunity discovering arts they wouldn’t generally have access to.”

Classes are held at the arts council building and at Elkin Elementary School.

Classes offered during this session are:

•Art Exploration K with Lynne Chandler: Kindergarten students will experience a variety of mediums through art projects on Tuesdays at EES from 2:30-3:30 pm. Class is for Kindergarten students only and limited to six.

•Art Exploration with Lynne Chandler: Students will experience a variety of mediums through art projects on Thursdays at EES from 2:30-3:30 pm. Class is for students in 1st grade and up and limited to eight.

•Sewing with LeAnne Mantero: Learn basic sewing skills through small projects. 3rd grade and up, Thursdays, 3:00-5:00 p.m. at FAC. Additional individual supplies will be needed.

•Beginning Pottery with Leighanne Wright: Learn the basics of hand-building ceramics and design through several projects. For 1st grade and up on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. at FAC.

•Intermediate Pottery with John Poindexter: For students who have taken a hand-building pottery class before or have previous experience with ceramics. Work with clay and design on Mondays from 3:15-4:15 p.m. at FAC. For 3rd grade through high school.

The Foothills Arts Council recommends calling 835-2025 to reserve your space.
