About 150 people attended the Yadkin Valley Rotary Club’s annual New Year’s Day lunch on Wednesday, in an event that several said felt like a strong community gathering.

Rotary Club President John Cahill said he enjoyed seeing people who hadn’t seen each other in years embrace each other and chat at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday.

“The people that came raved about the event,” Cahill said.

This year, First United Methodist Pastor Mark Barden, a member of the local Rotary Club, was in charge of the event. He said Tuesday shortly after the lunch that he estimated that the lunch raised about $2,000. The proceeds will go toward local scholarships for students Wilkes, Elkin and Starmount high schools.

Attendees had country ham, collard greens, black-eyed peas and cornbread. Barden also handed out several door prizes.
