To the editor,
President Trump’s attempt to reduce Federal funding for the ‘Meals on Wheels’ (MOW) programs has been met with criticism. I think the President, in his own way, is reminding us of the ‘Subsidiarity Principle’, meaning that the smallest and most local charitable unit is preferred for such programs as MOW. When we send money to Washington as tax, most of it feeds a bureaucracy; a small fraction of what remains may be returned to us. MOW should be funded locally. To illustrate the ‘subsidiarity principle’ I will match gifts to local Churches for MOW to a total of $200.
