Elkin High was the hotter team on a hot day at Elkin Municipal Park Thursday afternoon.

The Elks, behind rallies at No. 3 and No. singles, defeated East Wilkes, 7-2 on a hot, humid afternoon and evening at Elkin Municipal Park.

“It was a great match,” Elkin assistant coach Pam Fencl said. “It’s a good way to start the season.”

Ally Gentry at No. 3 and Julie Nuemark at No. 4 both bounced back from first-set losses to win in tiebreakers and put Elkin up 5-1 going into doubles.

“We started out very sluggish,” Fencl said. The girls really hung in there and rallied.”

Miracle Walters and Mikayale Dimmette won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and then won together at No. 1 doubles.

“It was hard to play in it,” Walters said. “You have to get that out of your mind and just play.”

Walters said she didn’t expect the win to come in the fashion it did. “I didn’t think we’d win like that,” she said. “It’s always good to win a match like that - especially against your rivals. And it’s a good way to start off the season.”

East Wilkes Coach Aaron Simmons, while not pleased with his team overall, was pleased with Bethany Testerman at No. 3 singles and his No. 2 doubles team. Testerman was bouncing back from a tough loss against Ashe County Tuesday.

“Bethany really did a nice job around the court,” Simmons said. “She executed the strategy I asked her to.

“It was a good win for my No. 2s. I love the way Brie (Jarvis) played at the net and I liked the way Brooke (Sealey) put pressure on them from the baseline. Hopefully it will give us some momentum going into next week.”

“It was really encouraging,” Fencl said. “But we play them again. They’ll be ready for us next time. They’re a good team.”

East Wilkes, 0-1 pending the completion of a suspended match with Ashe County, is at Surry Central Monday. Elkin, 2-0, is at North Wilkes Tuesday.
