CHARLOTTE — The West Seniors defeated the East Seniors in the Powerade State Games softball competition held June 16-18 at UNC-Charlotte and Hopewell High School in Charlotte.


Region 5 won the underclassmen tourney, defeating Region 6, 5-4, in the gold medal game. Region 7, which featured many local players, took the bronze in the eight-team field.


Elkin’s Cayley Shoemaker was the area’s lone representative on the West Seniors. The West won the best-of-three series 2-0, winning 2-1 and 10-0.


Local players representing Region 7 were Mallory Choplin (Forbush, ‘15); Kirstan Beaver (Elkin, ‘16); Caitlyn Macemore (East Wilkes, ‘16); Rebekah Cranford (Elkin, ‘15). Region 7 lost to Region 8 in their opener, 6-5. They won their second game over Region 1, 13-6; and the bronze medal game over Region 3, 9-5.


Region 7 was coached by Surry Central’s Glenn Craddock and Richard Layne; East Wilkes’ Bradley Hayes; and Davie’s Darby Beck.
