John Bauguess limited Elkin to three singles as visiting West Wilkes downed the Buckin’ Elks, 8-1, Friday night.

Zach Staley and Jacob Wood each had three hits for the Blackhawks. Staley’s two-run single in the fourth inning put West Wilkes up 5-0.

Bauguess struck out 12 as the Blackhawks improved to 5-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Drew Shinkle, Seth Haynes and Bubba Bradley had Elkin’s hits. Bradley drove in Shinkle, who had reached on an error, with the Buckin’ Elks’ only run in the sixth.

Starmount men, women sweep: In Boonville, the Starmount men and women ran, threw, and jumped to easy wins Thursday.

On the women’s side, the Rams finished 33 points ahead of North Wilkes, while on the men’s side, they finished 23.5 points ahead of East Wilkes.

The Cardinals were third on the women’s side, edging Alleghany by one point.

Thursday


Alleghany 164, Wilkes Central 167, Elkin 170, Starmount 171, Ashe County 183, East Wilkes 191: In West Jefferson, Elkin and Starmount took third and fourth place, respectively, in an eight-team match.


Conditions were cool and breezy at Mount Aire Golf Course.


Josiah Blevins led Elkin and all scorers with a 36. Harrison Hall (42, tied for ninth overall) and Noah Carter (45) scored for the Buckin’s Elks, while Jacob Christian and Logan Johnson each carded 47s.


Starmount was led by Nick Gunnell and Brady Hunter, who both posted 41s. Gunnell and Hunter tied for the fifth-best individual scores. Gunner Cass (43) and Landon Doss (46) also scored for the Rams.


East Wilkes, which took sixth, was led by Dustin Holloway’s 42. Holloway’s score was tied for ninth best on the day. Zach Nixon (48), Benjamin Prevette (49), and Logan Combs (52) also scored for the Cardinals.


Hunter Maines paced Alleghany to the team win with a 40, while Zach Caudill led Wilkes Central to a second-place finish with a 39.


West Wilkes (201) and North Wilkes (208) rounded out the team scores.


Women’s Soccer

Friday


Starmount 0, North Wilkes 0 (2OT): In Hays, the Rams and Vikings played to a tie.


Shots were 18-15 in favor of the Rams. Amanda O’Donnell made 10 saves for Starmount and Hanna Roberts made 11 saves for North Wilkes to earn shutouts.


Starmount Coach said standout players were Selena Foster at sweeper; Janet Zamora at midfield; and Claire Maske and Katelyn Coffman up front.


“We did a much better job of passing than we have all year,” Markman said.


Starmount, now 2-8-1, hosts Mount Airy Tuesday.
