A pair of timely three-run homers spelled defeat for Elkin as Surry Central took a 6-4 non-conference win Wednesday at Crater Park.

“That’s one of the things we’ve been working on,” Surry Central Coach Glenn Craddock said. “We haven’t had the opportunity, due to the weather, to work on it. We hit the ball well and we hit the ball hard.

“I was glad to see our kids come through today.”

Of Elkin, Craddock said, “This is a good team; a well-coached team.”

Madison Robertson cracked a three-run homer to left in the third to put the Golden Eagles up 3-0 and Kristen Key brought Surry Central from one down to two up with a three-run homer in the fifth.

Elkin scored all four of their runs in the third inning. Rebekah Cranford started the rally with a one-out walk and Bethany Turner followed with a double. After Nicole Collins walked to load the bases, Reagan Parks and Victoria Kiger followed with RBI singles. With two out, Sara Cudd blooped a two-run single to right to put the Lady Elks up 4-3.

The Elkin softball team is still struggling with the issues surrounding the death of Elkin assistant coach Steve Shaw’s ex-wife, Jennifer Shaw, who died Sunday.

“I’m going to chalk this one up to emotion,” Shaw said of the loss. “I’m still proud of the girls. They wanted to win.

“It just wasn’t the Lady Elks we know.”

Shaw said he “had to give props to Sara Cudd. The bottom of our lineup stepped up.”

Cayley Shoemaker went the distance for Elkin, allowing six hits and three earned runs. She walked one and struck out four.

Cassidy Joyner came in for Surry Central in the third. She gave up three hits, no runs, walked two, and struck out four in 4.2 innings of work.
