KERNERSVILLE — The Elkin High School fencing team had another strong performance recently at Bishop McGuiness and is now in solid control of first place in the Western Conference.

Junior Matthew Schumak, captain, was undefeated for the day. Sophomore Lindsey Shinkle and freshmen Drake Bogart and Dakota Dudley-Doss provided several critical wins and strong support.

Elkin routed third place Morehead High School 5-0 after they had just upset second place Bishop 5-4.

In the final match of the day between Bishop and Elkin, the team took control beating the Villains 5-3.

Elkin will defend last year’s state title in February seeking its eighth championship. Schumak will defend his individual title.

In December, Schumak took second place in the men’s Cadet division (20-year-old and under) of the Junior Olympic qualifiers. JOs will be held in Portland, Ore., in February. Sam Cason tied for third in the 16-year-old and under division.
