After a slow start in its first quarter, Elkin’s Lady Elks ripped into the Starmount Rams on Friday securing its first back-to-back win of the season with a 60-22 victory.

The Lady Elks improve to 2-0 in conference and 4-6 overall.

Starmount is 0-1 in conference and 0-6 overall.

The young Rams team showed signs of competitiveness early in the game with point guard Darion Dobson, a sophomore, often finding Kensie Harris who had open baskets.

After a timeout, adjustments were made and the Lady Elks focused on Harris and Dobson. Elkin shifted into an aggressive full court press attacking Starmount who at times failed to get the ball over midcourt.

Elkin’s Miracle Walters put eight points up on the board by halftime helping the Lady Elks to a 33-12 lead.

“I told the girls to keep the pressure on and stop giving up the easy baskets,” said Coach Derek Carter of the Lady Rams. “They had to make some adjustments, and they did.”

In the third quarter, Starmount only scored two points. Both points were free throws.

Elkin’s Kylie Thomas led all players with 13 points and was often seen boxing out opponents. She also took advantage of her inside presence by positioning herself and converting second chance points.

After the game, Carter said that he believes his team is improving.

“We’re getting better and working things out. The girls are playing as a team. We’re looking forward to playing East Surry after Christmas. They’re a very strong team who we lost to recently, but we feel we can be right there,” he said.

Up next: Both teams make an appearance in the Alleghany Christmas Tournament scheduled for Thursday. Starmount will face South Stokes. Elkin plays East Surry.
