WEST JEFFERSON — The Buckin’ Elks ran into a determined Ashe County side Friday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

On the brink of a share of the Mountain Valley Conference title, the Huskies stormed out of the gate on Senior Night, jumping out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Cory Anderson responded for Elkin, punching it in from four yards out to get the Elks on the board, cutting the deficit to 21-7 with 6:32 left in the opening half.

But Ashe kept scoring, grabbing a commanding 35-7 advantage at the break.

The Huskies tacked on three more scores in the second half to cruise to the convincing 56-7 victory, securing their share of the conference championship with Starmount and North Wilkes.

Elkin dropped its second-straight game heading into the upcoming 1A state playoffs. The Elks capped the regular season with a 6-5 mark overall and a 3-4 record in league play.
