ELKIN - While Starmount and Elkin square off in Boonville in the annual Battle of the Bridge tonight, the remaining six Mountain Valley Conference teams open league play around the area.


In Hays, East and North Wilkes battle in the conference opener.


The Vikings (3-1) sit tied atop the league standings after a strong non-conference run, looking to remain in the driver seat when the win-less Cardinals (0-4) come to town.


North is coming off a big 35-34 victory over non-conference power North Surry last week, while East dropped a tough 31-20 decision to the resurgent Forbush Falcons.


In Moravian Falls, another squad is fighting for their first win of the season - surprising 0-4 Wilkes Central.


The defending league champions have only scored 23 points in non-conference play and will look to right the ship against county rival West Wilkes (2-2) tonight.


The Blackhawks are coming off a 26-13 defeat to unbeaten Walkertown last week.


In Sparta, Alleghany and Ashe County square off to round the league.


The Trojans (2-2) boast the second highest scoring offense in the conference (34.0 points per game) and will look to put up points against the Huskies (1-3).


Both squads are coming off their bye weeks.


Former Mountain Valley Conference charter program Forbush heads into its bye week before returning in its new conference.
