DOBSON - The Buckin’ Elks notched a statement win Friday night in Dobson coming out of their bye week.

Elkin’s stout defense shut down Surry Central’s high-powered offense, riding the stellar performance to a big 18-7 non-conference victory.

The Elks pitched a shutout for over three and a half quarters, not allowing a score until Golden Eagle leading rusher Raymond Salazar found the endzone from four yards out with just 3:30 to play.

But the last-minute touchdown was not enough to power a late comeback.

Junior quarterback Josh Strickland and the Elkin offense built up an 18-0 cushion, taking advantage of the strong defensive effort.

After Zane Millsaps got the Elks on the board first with an early field goal, Strickland fired two touchdown passes in the second quarter. The junior signal-caller found Jamiles Hayes on a 19-yard strike to open the frame before connecting with Daniel Brinegar on his first touchdown catch of the season just before the half as Elkin took a 15-0 lead into the locker room.

Millsaps rounded out the scoring with his second boot of the night - a 35-yarder early in the fourth quarter to seal the impressive victory.

The Elks, now 2-1 on the young season, return to the field Friday in Week Five action when they travel to Statesville to take on West Iredell in their non-conference finale.

Elkin then turns its attention to rival Starmount in the Battle of the Bridge to open Mountain Valley Conference play in Boonville on Sept. 27.
