Let me introduce myself, while you may have seen some of my articles running in The Elkin Tribune or The Yadkin Ripple in the past with a byline of Civitas Media as the newspapers picked up some of region’s sister papers’ articles, now I will be writing under the byline of Content Manager for The Tribune and The Ripple.

My background in journalism goes back to classes I took at Brevard College as a senior and a part-time internship worked at The Mount Airy News during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks during that senior year, in 1999-2000.

About a year later, in February of 2001, a staff reporter position became available at The Mount Airy News, and the job was offered to me and I accepted. Thus starting what I never could have imagined would be a career in journalism, despite me having a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in literary studies. While I have a great appreciation for teachers and the life-long learning them promote, it was not for me, so what else do you do with a literary studies concentration?

It seems I fell into journalism through some other master plan for which I didn’t know I was being trained.

So after covering the city of Mount Airy government for a while, the county of Surry government for a short stint, my largest amount of time at The News was spent as education reporter, along with other general assignment stories, covering the political and fun parts of Mount Airy City Schools and Surry County Schools.

Also, I’ve served as the editor of The Pilot, a role I will still be holding while here in Elkin, for at least eight or nine years.

For a year and a half, during the time when the local papers shifted ownership from Mid-South Management to Heartland Publications, I served as editor of The Stokes News and The Weekly Independent, taking The Pilot editor role there.

Then I returned to The Mount Airy News as associate editor in 2008, retaining editor of The Pilot, in a role I’ve held until Oct. 2, my first day here.

Elkin is not completely unknown to me, but I certainly have a lot to learn about the community, its people, its culture, its history.

The title of content manager, a role that previously was titled editor, means just that — I will be editing, leading and promoting the editorial content publishing in print, in addition to online at elkintribune.com and yadkinripple.com and via the company’s Facebook pages and other social media sites.

The staff here at The Elkin Tribune and The Yadkin Ripple, myself included, are dedicated to bringing readers the events and news of the community that affect their everyday lives, whether in school, through town or county decisions, breaking news events or other activities in the region.

Some news is good, some will be bad or sad, but the overall goal is to make sure readers are informed and knowledgeable about what is happening around them.

And while I will do my best to remember everyone’s names as I meet them, I am one person and I will be meeting many new people as I get out and about in the area, so bear with me as I come to learn you all.

At home in the Longhill community of Pilot Mountain, I have a husband, Johnnie III, who has extended relatives in the Yadkin County area, and a son, Jackson Kourtland, who we call Kourt, who will be 3 on Nov. 2

I’m looking forward to my new journey.
