There will be a lot going on this Saturday at the Circle K in Elkin.
The store and the surrounding property will host a yard sale from 7 to 11 a.m. and a Racing for Kira fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. to benefit Kira Bray and her family.
Kira, now a quadraplegic, was injured Jan. 26 in a car accident. She suffered a vertebrae fracture in her neck. She has turned 6 — in February — since the accident.
After being released from Levine’s Children Hospital in Charlotte April 15, Kira is now at home.
The money raised Saturday will help both parents go to Philadelphia when Kira goes to the Shriner’s Hospital for observation. The observation will hopefully provide a treatment to improve Kira’s quality of life.
Kira’s father, Joel, said the family has learned to adjust to life after the accident. “We just kind of take things as we come to them,” he said, adding “the community has been really supportive. We appreciate it more than they know.
“We just can’t get out there and tell them.”
“They’ve really helped out with everything,” Kira’s mother, Sherry said.
Joel said Kira had a Princess Party Tuesday night. “It was great to see a smile on her face,” he said.
During the Racing for Kira fundraiser, cars that run and the drivers who run them at Friendship Motor Speedway will be on hand. There will be 100 gift bags for the first 100 children who come. There will be balloon pops (courtesy of Big Lots), a duck pond, and a dunking booth to name a few of the events.
“We have a lot of good things going on,” said Donna Anen, who works at the Circle K and is the wife of Friendship driver George Anen. Anen said items to be raffled off include T-shirts, gift certificates, tools, jewelry, die-cast cars — “a lot of things donated by local businesses.”
The drawings will take place at 3:30 p.m. Ticketholders need not be present to win, Anen said.
“I want to thank all the race car drivers for showing their support for her,” Joel said. Many drivers at Friendship Motor Speedway have “Racing for Kira” written inside of a heart on their cars. Bray drove in the SeCA Late Model class until this season.
The Circle K is located on the southeast corner of CC Camp Road and Johnson Ridge Road — across from Lowe’s.
