Through the Share-A-Book program, eight preschools and daycares had guest readers and a special book during the month of March.
On March 26, Wendy Guiducci, a librarian at the Elkin Public Library, held a special storytime at the Elkin Presbyterian Church Preschool and then presented each child with a book of their very own. The books were donated by the Friends of the Elkin Public Library through their Share-A-Book event, which took place during the month of March.
In addition to Guiducci, five other volunteers helped make this program a success. Nancy Ball, Debbie Carson, Lois Folger, Joan Sanders and Leslie Schlender conducted storytimes at area preschools and daycares, including First Baptist Church of Elkin Preschool, First United Methodist Church of Elkin Preschool, Elkin Elementary Preschool, Shema Kids Christian Academy, Little Birds Child Care, Surry Head Start and Oak Grove Head Start.
Through the Share-A-Book program, volunteers from the Friends of the Elkin Public Library visit each school once a week for four weeks, presenting an engaging program with stories and activities. At the last visit each child is given a book. This year the program reached out to 198 children, giving each of them an age-appropriate book that will encourage a love of reading and help them as they learn to read on their own.
“The Friends of the Elkin Public Library have conducted the Share-A-Book program for several years, and believe it is a great way to reach out to the community and foster a love of reading with children at a very early age,” said Sybil Myers, president, Friends of the Elkin Public Library. “The volunteers who visit each school are instrumental in making this program a success, and we are excited to hear every year how much the children enjoy this program.”
The Friends of the Elkin Public Library is a non-profit organization that supports the library and its programs through an extensive volunteer network as well as fundraising events including the annual Used Book Sale and the Storybook Character Breakfast.
