ELKIN — After weeks of diligent practice, the Yadkin Valley Community Band will be putting their combined talents on display this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Elkin High School Dixon Auditorium with a free community concert.

The band features a mixture of high school students, retired and active school band directors and music teachers as well as other musicians from represented communities. About 50 participants include residents of Ashe, Wilkes, Yadkin and Surry counties.

A strong contingent of local talent will be taking part in the concert.

The performance concludes the band’s fall/winter session. Band members have been practicing regularly at East Wilkes High School under the direction of Ben Crotts, who also serves as band director for Starmount High School.

No admission will be charged, but donations will be accepted at the door. An intermission will be provided.

Now in its fourth year, the band was initially organized through the efforts of East Wilkes High School Band Director Jennifer Weddington, her husband, elementary school music specialist Mike Weddington, former East Surry High School Band Director Jonathan Chesson and others.

“Our purpose,” said Sherri Collins, a Pilot Mountain resident, “is to foster the appreciation of music. I believe our overall sound has improved each year. I’m delighted with the outstanding group of musicians that has been assembled. Those who come out will be able to enjoy an entertaining evening of music.”

The band will begin its next session on March 13 at East Wilkes High School. Rehearsals are from 6 to 8 p.m. and musicians of all ages are invited to take part. For more information, email correspondence may be sent to yadkinvalleycommunityband@gmail.com.
