School districts announce makeup days
Elkin considers Memorial Day for lost time

Inclement weather has led to back-to-back days off for jubilee students throughout the region.
Makeup dates for Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin school districts have been announced.
Elkin has two designated makeup dates on June 10 and 11, but officials are considering shifting other dates.
“Kids will have to make up both days of school,” said Superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe of Elkin City Schools. “We’re not going to get around makeup dates.
“Any decision we come up with is going to have to be approved by the board. The inclement weather calendar shows you that it should be placed at the end of the year, which are in June. Right now we are looking at a possibility of trading out a teacher work day sooner, or Memorial Day in May, but it’s going to depend on weather,” said Bledsoe.
According to Bledsoe, Feb. 28 is a staff development day and Memorial Day is an optional leave day.
“No day is ideal. If we had school today, nobody would come to school because it’s too dangerous. If we had school on Saturday, nobody would like that either,” said Bledsoe. “If days are tacked on at the end of the year, it becomes a problem with graduation.”
In Yadkin County, its schools superintendent, Dr. Todd Martin, said that his students will make up the days on Feb. 17 and March 12.
“Our calender has days built in for inclement weather, which is unique to Yadkin County. On those (designated) days we can use them to makeup days because of snow or weather that would close down a school. The inclement weather days become optional teacher work days if they’re not used for weather makeups,” said Martin.
Surry County Schools will require students to report on Feb. 14 and March 7, according to Sonia Dickerson, its director of communications. The days were previously listed on its calendar as an optional staff work day.
Students in Wilkes County will report to school on Feb. 14 and Feb. 18 to make up for the two days, according to a Wilkes County Schools spokeswoman. The February dates were previously listed as optional staff work days.
As of press deadline, all schools (Yadkin, Wilkes, Surry and Elkin) announced they will be closed on Friday.
