Locals will look for Super Bowl picks in food and in atmosphere on Super Bowl Sunday and enticing choices will be close by.

Restaurant 222 Public House located on East Main Street, Elkin, will open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., with heavy Super Bowl emphasis on hours of 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Server on game night for 222, Travis Adame recommended as a mainstay food pick — the homemade tortilla chips and salsa. For hot sauce connoisseurs who also enjoy flavor, Adame recommended the addition of the specially ordered “Ring of Fire hot sauce” as a condiment for any of the food selections, pulling for Seattle and also the “sweet heat” barbecue wings.

It is true, “some like it hot,” still others less. Heads or tails, the 222 Public House salsa is one enjoyed by all, characterized with a distinct, yet smooth pepper flavor and mild sweetness. The recipe remains a top-secret prepared by Guatemalan chef Rogelio Cortez, also affectionately known as “Rocko.”

Though all the food is good, said the chef, “Rocko” recommended the barb-e-que nachos as his ultimate favorite game day pick and will support the Broncos.

Bartender Sandra Schell said she will pull for Seattle “since they show good sportsmanship,” she added.

Prep Manager Josh Griffin proved to be the kitchen diplomat and said he will pull for both teams in a split decision.

Logan Templeton will work the early Super Bowl shift at 222 to get things prepared before 6 p.m. Templeton pointed out that a good-sized local brew and ale selection is available on game day. Adame concurred adding the restaurant will have tasting “flights” of four brews available for those still trying to make picks.

Owner Jeff Gibbs, originally from Florida, is a Miami Dolphins fan, but will be pulling for the Seahawks.

Co-owner, manager and bartender Erica Bullock would not venture to give a team pick, but said last week said she was split on the issue. However, her food pick is definitely the wings, she said, and her particular favorite flavor, “Blazin Asian.”

“I am a wing girl,” said Bullock, who limits her carbohydrate intake anyway making them the right choice for her. Bullock said the sauce for all wing flavors is 90 percent homemade, but doctored with any of the 25 in-house specially ordered hot sauces.

For those who do not limit their carb intake, she recommended the homemade wood-fired pizza.

A 70-inch flat television will be brought to the 222 Public House courtesy of Aaron’s Rentals. Locals can warm up with games of their own before the big game day officially begins with ring toss, darts, fuzz ball and ping pong.

Bullock said the restaurant expects heavy traffic for the Winter Olympics also, and getting a little misty eyed she said she hopes to do a gold medal shelf to celebrate the USA athletes’ accomplishments.

Elkin Tribune staff offered their food pick suggestions and various theories for team picks. Content Manager Wendy Byerly Wood said, “I’m pulling for nobody since the Cowboys aren’t in it,” but said the 222’s pepperoni and mushroom pizza is a definite food pick.

Business Development Manager Holly Lamm recommended 222’s bacon and cheese pizza and spinach and artichoke dip along with quarterback Peyton Manning. “I am pulling for Peyton Manning, but don’t know which team he plays on,” said Lamm.

Staff Reporter Anthony Gonzalez said he recommended a Blue Moon and an orange slice and pulling for Denver.

Yadkin Ripple Staff Reporter Kitsey Burns recommended food pick is the large soft pretzel served with homemade cheese sauce. Burns personally added the pub’s Tapatio hot sauce to the cheese dip.

Combs Butcher Shoppe in Elkin will give away 75 free chicken wings and pizza for the Super Bowl festivities on a Saturday drawing to take place at noon.

Before that time, owner Gary Sparks said anyone can come by the store and guess the number of pinto beans in a jar. Whoever comes the closest will win the food giveaway. The Combs family will do like others in the area and hold a family party at home. Combs said his entire family will be pulling for the Broncos.

“I just like Peyton Manning and I like the coach, he came from the Carolina Panthers.”

Combs said the store has on hand for those cooking at home on the big day lots of choices for the spread. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

From Fiddles Pub in Elkin, Chef Steve Garrett recommended the house standards of Reubens and Brisket in unison with waitstaff, John Prigmore.

Garrett said, “We special order our meat, we get the good stuff and go fresh as much as possible. Every day we are bringing in the fresh vegetables.”

Garrett said personally, “I lean toward the Reuben.”

Prigmore added a better Reuben cannot be found this side of New York.

As far as team picks, Prigmore was confident enough to venture, “I am convinced it’s going to be the Broncos, though everybody disagrees.”

Except for Chef Garrett, apparently, who was brave enough to pull for the San Francisco 49ers over the Carolina Panthers during the playoffs. As a result, Garrett said it is “a strange situation” now with most of the crew and pub locals pulling for Seattle in a grudge match kind of scenario.

Fiddles owner Jack Montero, an Italian from Peru, worked for the State Department and people love him, said the Fiddles staff. The owner goes out of his way getting first quality foods, cares and caters to the people and draws a regular crowd, said Garrett.

Fiddles will be open from 11 a.m. until whenever on Super Bowl Sunday. At the small pub, people are allowed to bring their own music selections. In one sitting, it may range from Celtic, to Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Though they will not have live music on game day, they will have live music on Fridays and Saturdays during the week.

Theo’s Restaurant in Jonesville anticipates serving a large amount of wings to locals from call-ins. Year-long server Pebbles Wright said Theo’s wings are not breaded and are tossed in a homemade wing sauce. They may be ordered up until 6 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday for pick-up.

Wright declared she was pulling for Seattle but was unsure who owner Theo Kakouras was pulling for.
