DOBSON — The Corporate and Continuing Education Division of Surry Community College is offering several technology classes this spring: Internet Skills for Seniors, iPhone/iPad Fundamentals and a Microsoft Windows, Word & Excel course.


Internet Skills for Seniors is appropriate for students with little or no computer skills. This four-week class is designed to be hands on and user friendly for senior citizens. The following topics will be covered in the course: email basics, how to copy and paste from the Internet, using social media (Facebook and Pinterest), and Internet search skills. Students will also be shown how to use their computers to watch videos, listen to music and organize photographs. Tuition is $71.


Internet Skills for Seniors classes are offered: Jan. 21-Feb. 13, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m. at The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy; Jan. 27-Feb. 19, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville; Feb. 3-Feb. 26, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m. at The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain; and Feb. 18-March 13, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon at The Elkin Center in Elkin.


The iPhone/iPad Fundamentals Course provides users of Apple’s iPhone and iPad basic knowledge of both devices to make the most of their smartphones and tablets by learning unique tips, tricks and secrets. Students will not only learn the basics such as setting up email accounts, messaging, navigation and using controls, but they will also be introduced to the newest iOS operating system and learn the basics of working with iCloud. Topics such as security, iTunes, popular apps, and photography resources will be emphasized during this course. The four-week class is appropriate for users of the iPhone and/or iPad, which must be provided by each student. Tuition is $71.


iPhone/iPad Fundamentals classes are offered: Jan. 14- Feb. 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon at The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy; Feb. 4-Feb. 27, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain; March 3-March 26, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville; and April 1-April 24, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m. at The Elkin Center in Elkin.


Microsoft Windows, Word & Excel is an eight-week course that will show students with basic computer skills how to use: Microsoft Windows 2010, Microsoft Word 2010, and Microsoft Excel 2010 programs. Students will be introduced to basic computer terms, how to use the Windows controls, File Management, Word Processing and Spreadsheets while developing a moderate comfort level of basic computer skills. Students will be shown how to work with files, create new documents, how to save and rename documents, how to work with text to include editing, typing, inserting, highlighting, and deleting text. Students will learn how to write formulas and use built-in functions to have Excel automatically calculate totals, averages, monthly loan payments, and other common business calculations. Tuition is $127.


Microsoft Windows, Word & Excel classes are offered: Jan. 14-March 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy; Jan. 14-March 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Elkin Center in Elkin; March 11- May 1, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain; and March 11-May 1, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville.
