At the competition, the team participated in a push-ups and sit-ups competition.

After completing of the PT test, the Elkin Raiders moved to the second event — the knot tying relay race where the cadets were scored on their ability to tie correctly four types of knots after running four 100-meter sprints in four-man buddy teams. The team scored high in accuracy and speed, according to Maj. Roy Ferguson, Senior Army instructor at East Surry High School.
According to Ferguson, the next event challenged the team to work together to build a one-rope bridge that the entire team would have to cross over a simulated water obstacle. The team constructed and crossed the bridge in four minutes.
The fourth event tested the Elkin Raider’s strength and stamina by pulling an Army HUMVEE about 40 yards up a gradual incline. The vehicle was pulled 40 yards in 30 seconds.
The fifth event was the litter/stretcher carry team event.
The last event was the 5K team run. All eight team members had to run 13 laps around the 1/4-mile track staying together and carrying their unit guidon/flag. The Raiders completed the task in 30 minutes.
