Lights and sirens will sound through town Saturday afternoon as the Elkin and C.C. Camp fire departments host the fourth annual Fire Truck Parade for Fire Prevention Week.

Invitations were emailed and sent out to between 70 and 100 fire departments, said Lt. Kevin Carter of the Elkin Fire Department.

“We had 30 to 40 entries last year, and it’s growing,” Carter said of the yearly parade. “Each year it seems to grow and there are a lot of good ideas.

“It is a good way to get out in the community and show off our apparatus, and for public education — a lot of people see our trucks going down the road, but they don’t know what’s behind the doors — and to meet the personnel,” he said.

The parade is held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, which is held by the National Fire Protection Association and officially was Oct. 6-12. This year’s fire prevention theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

The fire trucks and apparatus will line up at Memorial Park Drive at 1 p.m., and it will begin at 2 p.m. following West Market Street and then traveling up North Bridge Street to the Belk and Ingles shopping center on the north end of town.

The community is invited to join the fire personnel and apparatus in the shopping center parking lot following the parade where there will be bouncy houses for the kids and trophies awarded for the trucks.

“They can get pictures made and look at the trucks, there will be literature for the kids and plastic helmets,” said Carter.

“Last year I think there were some vintage fire trucks, too,” he said. “Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin are always well represented.”

Including Carter, he said the parade organizers are Elkin’s Chief Tommy Wagoner and Lt. David Wagoner, Lanny Whitaker and C.C. Camp Volunteer Fire Department’s Dustin Murphy.

“Our plan is to make this thing extremely big. Our committee is talking about getting more areas represented on the committee, maybe one member or two from each of the neighboring departments, to bring ideas to the table,” Carter said.
