A relative of a downtown Main Street business used an old store key to enter and allegedly help himself to cash from its register. Police caught the suspect in the store and arrested him.
On Monday, the Elkin Police Department responded to the Hospital Thrift Store located at 103 W. Main St. in reference to a breaking and entering.
“In the store, the officers found Matthew Rhyne Day, 28, of Elkin. Day had monies from the cash register in his possession,” said Capt. Kim Robison.
Officers charged Day with felony breaking and entering and felony larceny after breaking and entering.
Day was transported to the Elkin Police Department for processing and then taken to the Surry County Magistrate’s Office.
According to the Hospital Thrift Store, Day is the grandson of its owner and he always had a key to the store. The store owner, who was emotional during the interview and asked not to be mentioned by name, indicated that she hopes the action taken by police will provide the necessary steps needed to help her grandson with his alleged drug problem.
Bail was set at $1,000. Day was placed in the Surry County Jail.
