Pinterest-inspired classes scheduled at Surry Community College

DOBSON — Surry Community College is offering two Pinterest-inspired classes to prepare for the holidays.
Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo-sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, and hobbies. Users can browse other pinboards for images, “re-pin” images to their own pinboards, or “like” photos.
Artist Charlotte Mae Marshall of the White Plains community will teach the classes. Marshall is a muralist and has always had a passion for art, according to the news release announcing the classes. Not only does she love painting and crafting, she has the same passion for sharing and teaching her techniques.
“The Pinterest-inspired classes that I am offering through Surry Community College feature some of the great ideas that people see and pin on Pinterest, but they do not have the time or know how to do,” Marshall said. “These ideas will be easily duplicated outside of the class if the students wish to make gifts later on. The classes are going to be a lot of fun.”
The Pinterest-inspired class will be offered on two nights in October and two nights in November. Fall decorations will be the theme in October to help students get ready for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
“We are going to make pumpkin decorations out of old books,” Marshall said. “I’ve always repurposed or up-cycled as it’s called. We will be repurposing unused items in our home to create a new holiday décor during the classes.”
The first set of classes is scheduled for Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The second round will be on Nov. 5 and Nov. 12 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will feature Christmas decorations.
Students will create Christmas tree ornaments using a recipe of flour, milk and alum. The substance is like a white clay that can be baked or air dried and later painted.
“People can use this same recipe to make their kids’ handprints each year,” Marshall said.
Another Christmas project will be taking old light bulbs and turning them into ornaments that can be lighted.
In February 2013, Reuters and ComScore stated that Pinterest had 48.7 million users globally.
