The water leak on E. Main Street that was the size of a pinhole a week ago only to grow larger each day has been repaired by the Town of Elkin Public Works Department.

The leak was located at 122 E. Main St. adjacent to Chill on Main, a downtown eatery that is dependent on having adequate running water for its restaurant.

The water leak was reported to town officials on Saturday, Aug 31.

Repairs concluded on Friday, Sept. 6.

When asked to estimate how much water spewed from the leaky pipe, town officials estimated approximately 5 gallons per minute.

“We’ve had a couple of problems at this location. This time we’ve decided to sleeve the new pipe. The manhole was in our way so we had to make a whole new tap to get a line to the main,” said Kevin Wilson with the Public Works Department.

“What caused the leak is a complete mystery to us. This section was replaced with new pipe in 1999. We see no evidence of what caused the break. Sometimes rocks get in the way,” said Wilson.

Wilson said upon examination of the pipe was that it had a slit around an inch to an inch and a half long.

Pipe leaks of late are not new to downtown Elkin.

Traffic was blocked from using one lane of Bridge Street in Elkin a month ago while work crews worked on another underground problem nearby the Main St. pipe.

A cracked water pipe under the train tracks just a block away forced town Public Works crews to shut off water and one lane of traffic on Bridge St.

Wilson previously told The Tribune that said it was caused by a cracked one-inch pipe leading to the empty storefront across from Elkin Antiques and Collectibles.
