DOBSON — The Surry County Board of Commissioners approved two rezoning requests this week.
The action came Monday night as the board met for its regular meeting in the commissioners meeting room in the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.
The first hearing was on a proposal to rezone a small corner highway lot at the intersection of U.S. 21 and Old 21 in the Bryan community.
The applicant, Walter C. White, was seeking to rezone a one-third acre parcel from rural agricultural to business use.
Prior to a hearing on the request, County Planner Kim Bates told the board that the parcel was no longer viable as zoned because of the small size of the lot and the fact that surrounding parcels already were zoned for business use.
“We have heard no concerns from the community, and the planning board agrees and recommends the rezoning,” he said. “This looks like a pretty solid rezoning application.”
No one spoke during the hearing, and the rezoning request unanimously was approved on a motion by Commissioner R.F. “Buck” Golding, with a second by Commissioner Larry Phillips.
The second hearing was to rezone two contiguous parcels totaling 27 acres on Hickory Hill Road.
Applicant Ethelene A. Edwards requested the parcels be rezoned from manufactured home park and general residential to rural agricultural use.
Bates told the board that there is a “patchwork of zoning” in the area.
“The problem is she wants to sell the property and is having a problem marketing the property with the multiple zonings,” he said. “She needs to have consistent zoning.”
The county planner told the board that no opposition had come forward during his department’s consideration of the application.
No one spoke during a hearing on the application, and the board unanimously approved the measure on a motion by Commissioner Jimmy Miller, with a second by Golding.
