Elkin High’s homecoming had a lot of memorable moments for 2013.

The school celebrated its annual football game and dance with several pre-game rituals for the students.

A pep rally in the gym started things off with booming drums and an excited student body. Middle Schoolers and lower classmen cheered as the football players and seniors filed into the gym.

A boy from each grade dressed up in a “beauty contest.”

They took turns strutting onto the gym floor in dresses and skirts before their fellow students voted to see who won the contest. The student who received the loudest cheers was awarded first place.

Seniors and sophomores squared off against juniors and freshmen in a game of tug-of-war on the gym floor. Neither side wanted to give an inch, eventually leading to the rope breaking rather than either side loose.

After school the students and local celebrators lined Main Street to watch the parade file down the hill from EHS and around downtown Elkin.

The band began the long line of participators behind Police Chief Monroe Wagoner in a squad car. Representatives from many of the school’s clubs rode in cars and threw candy to the crowds.

The parade wrapped downtown and back up Standard Street.

The game was against North Wilkes High and saw Katherine Gibson named as the school’s homecoming queen at halftime.
