Windy Gap man killed, bank robbed before capture made

A man was found dead Monday from an apparent gunshot to the head, according to a press release from the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.
The Wilkes County Communications center received a 911 call Monday around 10 a.m. regarding a shooting in the Windy Gap area of Wilkes County. Upon arrival deputies found a man dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
At approximately 10:24 a.m. a separate report came in of an armed robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank at 1899 West U.S. Highway 421.
Wilkesboro Police confirmed the robbery suspect matched the description of the shooting suspect, Rainer Johannes Hoedl, 51, according to the release.
Hoedl was listed as a resident of 251 Goldmine Ridge Road in North Wilkesboro.
Hoedl’s description was broadcast to law enforcement officials in the surroundig counties, as well as a description of his vehicle.
The release said a state trooper observed Hoedl’s vehicle traveling west on Highway 421 at approximately 12:10 p.m. The trooper and Watauga Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a vehicle stop and apprehended Hoedl without incident.
Hoedl is currently being held in the custody of the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office on charges of murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to the release.
No bond has been set as of press time.
