Boonville woman raffles quilt for cancer research
by Taylor Pardue Staff Reporter
She’s 93 and a cancer survivor, but her fight against the disease is not over.
No, Olean Harris is not taking chemo or radiation. She’s raffling a handmade quilt to further support cancer research.
Harris is partnering with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of the Triad for a quilt raffle and luncheon Oct. 19.
The raffle will be held at Center United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Yadkinville. It runs from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., but doors open at 10 a.m.
Harris is a bladder cancer survivor from Boonville. Her quilt is a handmade ‘Yo Yo’ quilt.
A Yo Yo quilt is made of rosettes, which are formed by collecting fabric edges together to form a petal. These are then sewn into patterns or straight lines to form a quilt.
The style was very popular in the 1930’s and ’40s.
She began making the quilt after attending several of the luncheons.
“I’ve gone to this luncheon for six years straight,” Harris said. “I’m a craft worker, and I’ve always donated crafts to them.”
The lunches are an annual event and has been held for the last eight years.
“Normally somebody donates a quilt for something every year,” Clara Holcomb said.”And then we have a cake raffle. We have donate cakes and stuff.”
Holcomb is the president of members of the BCR Foundation. She said there was also a silent auction for other donated items.
There are also door prizes.
The quilt will be raffled off during the luncheon for $1 tickets, or six tickets for $5.
Luncheon tickets are $12.
The luncheon has a different theme each year.
This year’s theme is “Christmas Hope.” Everyone is encouraged to their tackiest Christmas attire.
Cancer survivors will be honored at the event, but everyone is welcome to attend.
The Enon Brothers will perform during the lunch.
All proceeds will go to the Wake Forest Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center to further cancer research.
“I just hope, making that quilt, that somebody in pain will prosper a little bit from the profit of that,” Harris said.
