Sheetz is coming to Elkin, The Tribune has learned.
Sheetz will be located on the northeast corner of C C Camp Rd. and Bridge St.
A fence has been erected surrounding the corner lot where construction will soon begin, per building officials.
According to the Surry County Building Department, the general contractor is I.L. Long Construction of Winston-Salem.
Calls to I.L. Long Construction to estimate the length of the project were not returned.
According to Town of Elkin officials, they have been working with Sheetz officials to build on the site in 2014, but were unaware of the exact time frame because of other projects Sheetz had in the queue.
“I'm excited to see the activity at the site,” said Leslie Schlender, economic development director for the Town of Elkin.
Sheetz, Inc. is a chain of gas stations and convenience stores owned by the Sheetz family. Its headquarters are in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Sheetz now has more than 400 locations across six states; Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.
The company has more than 13,600 employees.
Calls to Sheetz seeking protocol and guidelines on how local residents throughout Elkin can apply for employment were not returned.
All Sheetz stores are company-owned-and-operated. The company has no plans to sell franchises.
All Sheetz stores feature three grades of gasoline (octanes 87, 89, and 92/93), most offer kerosene, and many offer diesel.
It is unknown what types of octane will be carried at the location.
It is unknown if Sheetz will incorporate the station with its “convenience restaurant” concept. If so, customers would be able to purchase made-to-order sandwiches and hot dogs, as well as pizza, panini grilled sandwiches, breakfast items, salads and chili. French fries, chicken strips, and other fried appetizers could also be available.
