A convicted sex offender recently extradited to California to face sex-related charges has returned to Elkin only to face the grasp of local authorities.
“Nigel Garcia was arrested Tuesday night and charged with sex offender on child premises, identity theft, and obtaining property by false pretense,” said Lt.Mendy Peles of the Elkin Police Department. ” Garcia was also served with a warrant on behalf of the Wilkes County Sheriff’s office for possession of a firearm by a felon.”
When Elkin authorities got wind of Garcia’s return from California, they pounced.
Garcia, a former volunteer coach at Elkin Recreation and Parks Department was originally arrested on May 20 by Wilkes County deputies after they became aware of his criminal past. The suspect had been living in Elkin as David Quiroga, working as a mechanic in a country club and coaching for the Elkin Parks and Recreation Department.
Police say Garcia allegedly obtained a mortgage for an Elkin residence in the name of David Ramon Quiroga, a deceased individual.
A poster from San Jose, Calif. police department said Garcia has previously sexually assaulted children. He was convicted of sodomy with a child under 14 with force and lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 with force, San Jose police said.
Garcia was originally extradited back to California on July 10, confirmed the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office.
In California, Garcia posted bail on July 12.
“Garcia had two bonds for $35,000 each,” said media coordinator Sean Webby of the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office. “He posted them.”
Webby said he was not aware if Garcia was permitted to leave the state of California.
On Garcia’s newest charges in Surry County, and according to Senior Officer Chilton of the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, Garcia posted a $25,000 bond for Surry charges, and $2,500 for Wilkes charges.
“He was released yesterday (Wednesday),” said Senior Officer Chilton.
Garcia was bonded by a Greensboro-based company who processed a transfer bond requested from California.
“We processed a transfer bond for the local charges. The California bondsman is totally on-the-hook for this matter. We do not know anything about the California charges,” said bondman Walter Ellis.
Until his court dates, Garcia is residing in Elkin with his live-in girlfriend and her child. Garcia has another daughter who was placed into protective custody by Wilkes County back on May 20.
