Three people were shot in a Ronda home invasion, according to Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office officials.

The incident was reported around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday at 688 Little Elkin Church Road north of Ronda.

Police say the homeowner, Robert Monroe Newman, 60, was shot in the chest. Newman is in stable condition, according to sheriff’s office officials.

The two suspects, Don Delevicchio Thompson, 36, of Raleigh; and Collen Smith, 18, of Greensboro were also shot.

According to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson is in critical but stable condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Smith was treated and released to authorities.

The incident stemmed from a woman who approached the Newman residence asking for a drink of water after her vehicle was allegedly having car problems, said Wilkes County Sheriff Chris Shew.

The wife of Newman answered the door and informed the woman to use the spigot located on the side of the house.

“The woman and two men then forced their way into the home,” Sheriff Shew said.

Newman was armed with a gun, according to officials.

Police would not confirm if any suspects were armed.

Police would not elaborate on how Newman was shot in the chest.

The incident is still under investigation.

Charmaine Smith, 22, of Greensboro, and Latesha Brower, 24, of Atlanta, Ga., were also charged in connection with the incident, Shew said.

Charges include robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and first-degree burglary.
