Duke Energy made a $1,000 contribution toward a deer fence Tuesday.
Elkin High School’s environmental club has been working for more than a year to produce organic food in the school’s garden, located to the left of the main building.
Deer browsing has prevented the students from planting many of their desired crops. Without money to build a deer fence, the club has been forced to plant species of vegetables that deer do not usually eat.
With $1,000 toward the project, and another $1,000 promised by local business leaders, the club is expecting to build a deer fence around the entire garden soon. The students will be able to plant a wider variety of vegetables once the fence is completed.
Food grown in the garden is used by the foods class at the high school. The class has made dishes like potato soup with items collected in the garden.
