Two middle school students spent Veterans Day raising money to help build homes for soldiers.

Olivia Phillips of Elkin Middle School and Kayli Phillips of Pilot Mountain Middle School joined forces in front of the Big Lots in Elkin.

“We wanted to do something for the community on Veterans Day. We looked online and found a terrific charity that we just fell in love with,” said Olivia.

“We called a bunch of places to stand in front of their store, but it was continuous denial. Then we got in touch with Big Lots in Elkin and they welcomed us with open arms,” Olivia added.

The duo selected Homes for our Troops, a national organization assisting severely injured veterans and their families by raising money, building materials and professional labor, and by coordinating the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

The homes provided by Homes for our Troops are given at no cost to the veterans. One hundred forty-three have been built, 34 are in progress.

“Lots of people don’t take into consideration what the troops do out there. We just wanted to do our part,” said Olivia.

“We were looking online, but many of the companies didn’t have a physical place that we could sent the mo0ney to,” said Kayli.

The girls, both cousins, set a goal of $100.

“We have not counted the money in a while, but we feel that we’re over it,” said Olivia.

“This entire thing came together in about a week. We were home on a Saturday night and said what’s the best thing we could do. This was it,” said Kayli, smiling.
