Elkin City Schools celebrated October’s National Principal Month by recognizing its three principals at the Monday Board of Education meeting.
The board honored Principals Joel Hoyle, Pam Colbert and Anthony Davis as the monthly “board spotlight.”
Hoyle graduated Crest High School in 1984 and received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University in 1988.
He earned a master’s in agricultural education from Clemson in 1992. He then attended Gardner-Webb University and earned a second master’s in 2003 in school administration.
Hoyle came from Crest High School in Cleveland County to ECS to be the high school principal. He is in his second year with Elkin.
Colbert graduated from North Wilkes High School in 1986. She earned a bachelor’s in K-6 education from the UNC-Chapel Hill in 1990.
She received her master’s in school administration from Gardner-Webb in 2006 and has been with ECS for 15 years.
She served as the assistant principal at the elementary school for two years, six years as a teacher, and is in her seventh as principal of the middle school.
Davis is a Forbush High graduate from 1993. He earned his bachelor’s in history-secondary education from Appalachian State University in 1998.
He received a master’s in school administration from High Point University in 2011.
He worked with Forbush High School before making the move to Elkin City Schools. He served as the assistant principal at Elkin Elementary before being named the principal there earlier this year.
He is in his third year with ECS.
Assistant Principals Cassandra Morrison and Lisa Pendry also were recognized.
The Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce provided gift bags to each of the educators.
October was selected as National Principals Month in 2012. Congress dedicated the month to highlight the important work that principals do, whether it be in Kindergarten or in high school.
Often principals go unappreciated for their service to education. While teachers have a more public role in a child’s education, principals are the driving force behind a school’s success or failure.
