Teachers and students celebrated on Wednesday after learning that their classroom had rolled in some dough thanks to a local grant made possible by the Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation.

Third-grade teacher Pat Hiatt and fourth-grade teacher Samantha Newman of C.B. Eller Elementary School received a check by Erica Johnson, representative of Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation, who also was on hand with celebratory balloons for each of the winners.

The duo were finalists for a Bright Ideas grant provided by the corporation.

“Thirty-eight teachers applied this year and there are usually 11 to 13 recipients of the grant,” said Johnson.

“It’s an honor having C.B. Eller selected. These teachers, along with our complete staff all work very hard and the grants are helpful,” said Pamela Huffman, principal of C.B. Eller Elementary.

When officials walked into Newman’s classroom to presented her with the $675 ceremonial check, the announcement startled her.

“Oh my, I am so excited. This is so helpful for the kids,” said Newman.

Down the hall and in a different section of the school, Hiatt received $425.

“I’m grateful for the grant. It will certainly go toward great things for my kids,” said Hiatt.

The monies are earmarked to purchase materials directly related to activities in the awarded teacher classrooms.

The Bright Ideas Grant program helps local teachers fund creative classroom projects that may otherwise be impossible with limited financial resources. Each year Surry-Yadkin EMC gives a total of $6,250 to area schools.
