Coins tossed into a water fountain at a downtown hot spot has a local charity splashing over potential pocket change.

Missy Flemming, the executive director of the Yadkin Valley United Fund, said pennies add up and so do nickels, dimes and quarters.

The Liberty, at 222 E. Main St., is dedicating the fountain located outside of the building to support the YVUF.

The Liberty is owned by Cicely McCulloch.

“A dedication ceremony will be held on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the fountain,” said Flemming.

“Cicely contacted us about dedicating the fountain to our charity. The ceremony is to commemorate the occasion. All of the coins will be collected and used to serve many of the charities we support throughout the region,” continued Flemming.

McCulloch restored the building from a former tobacco warehouse into a $2 million multi-use development facility now featuring a banquet space, a retail store, an eatery and office space.

According to Flemming, local volunteer youth organizations such as the Boys and Girl Scouts will act as coin collectors for the donations.

According to McCulloch, a wine tasting ceremony will be available inside The Liberty upon conclusion of the dedication.
