DOBSON — The second-year Associate Degree in Nursing students at Surry Community College were honored on Sept. 22 with a striping ceremony and reception in the Grand Hall of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology on the college’s Dobson campus.

The striping ceremony was held to celebrate the accomplishments of those entering the second year of Surry’s nursing program. The single stripe on their nursing caps signifies the completion of the first year of nursing school.

Dr. Yvonne Johnson, SCC’s associate dean of Health Sciences, elaborated on the significance of the striping ceremony by saying, “As any nurse can attest, completion of the first year of nursing school is no small feat. These students have worked extremely hard in class, lab, and clinical to develop their nursing knowledge.”

The students honored at the ceremony are on track to graduate in May of 2017 at which time they may sit for the licensure examination for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

SCC’s second-year nursing students recognized during the ceremony are: Kristy Armstrong of Hamptonville; Peggy Bowes and Molly Lankford of Mount Airy; Landon Brawley of Yadkinville; Jodie Brock of Moravian Falls; Hannah Chapman of Rural Hall; Jonathan Combs of Winston-Salem; Jessica Cox of Hays; Ashley Craddock, Tess Dockery, Brandi Fowler, and Brian Sandusky of Dobson; Amanda Osborne of Grassy Creek; Ashley Seigler of Elkin; Lindsey Smith of King; and Teagan Wrenn of Lawsonville.

The Surry nursing program graduates provide nursing care to clients throughout their lives in a number of different settings. Surry students can choose to complete the ADN or Associate Degree in Nursing, which is a two-year program enabling students to sit for the examination leading to licensure as a registered nurse. Currently Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) can also choose to complete the LPN-ADN program, which is a three semester program enabling students to sit for the examination leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse.
