Surry graduates 63 High School Equivalency students

Surry Community College held its 27th annual High School Equivalency graduation on Aug. 21. Sixty-three students earned their HSE diploma between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.

DOBSON — A total of 63 students earned their High School Equivalency diplomas, formerly known as General Educational Development diploma (GED), from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016. These students were recently recognized at Surry Community College’s 27th annual HSE Graduation.

A reception for graduates, families and friends was held following the graduation ceremony with refreshments supplied by the Knights’ Grill on Aug. 21 in the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology, Dobson. Pat Widdowson, Board of Trustees member, attended as the guest speaker, and was introduced by Dr. George Sappenfield, vice president of Corporate and Continuing Education. SCC President Dr. David Shockley presented graduates with their diplomas.

Graduates include Tyler Barker of Boonville; Aaron Harkey of Clemmons; Karina Afinogentova, Joshua Collins, Diana Nava Rodriguez, Elani Oxendine, Elizabeth Pedraza Hernandez, Tanner Wood and Alyssa Woolhether of Dobson; Brendon Monath, Rex Palmer, Gabrielle Sanford and Kalen Wilborn of East Bend; Maria Apaseo-Arreola, Ellen Hunter and Steven Weaver of Elkin; Travis Calhoun and Kelsey Presnell of Hamptonville; Jessica Marley of Hays; Joseph Logan of Hillsville, Virginia; Yadira Castaneda Mayo, Sandra Rondeau and Daniel Stevenson of Jonesville; Dylan Frenette of King; Carl Gardner of Lowgap; William Ables, Christopher Chanclor, Keanu Cox, Craig Dobson, Jason Dooley, Jose Garcia, Cindi Gonzales, Walter King, Miguel Landeros Juarez, Nathan Marion, Teresa Mcswain, Ashley Morgan, Raven Scarberry, Brandon Shoemaker and Arnold Tolbert of Mount Airy; Tammy Cheek of North Wilkesboro; Nicole Austin, Abigail Donahue, Megan Hancock, Marissa Hayden, Summer Pierce, Angela Ricci and Stephenie Schnakenburg of Pilot Mountain; Richard Kipp and Ian Rice of Ronda; Timothy Bauguess, Paula King and Joel Lane of State Road; Dustin Moore of Thurmond; Summer Harp of Westfield; Kathryn Absher of Wilkesboro; and Dakota Jackson, Savannah Milton, Angela Sparks and Kinley Watson of Yadkinville.

Joshua Collins and Ellen Hunter also were awarded High School Equivalency scholarships during the ceremony to use to further their educational endeavors.
