DOBSON — On June 9, the Surry County School System honored retiring employees.

School board member Earlie Coe began the retirement celebration by saying, “On behalf of the Board of Education, I welcome each of you, school family and invited guests, to this year’s retirement celebration. If you add up the years of service from each of the 46 retirees listed on the program that would come to 888 years! That’s a lot of experience sitting in this room tonight! We want to recognize you for all you have done for our system. Thank you. It is a time to celebrate!”

Retirees received a dark pink rose, symbol of gratitude and appreciation, from school board members and central office administrators while Jonathan Norman played the guitar and sang, “In This Moment.” Retirees and their guests then enjoyed a delicious dinner. During dessert, Norman performed, “You Have Made a Difference.” Norman is a science teacher at Central Middle School. Everyone enjoyed his performances, which helped to make the night very special.

Mamie Sutphin, Board of Education member, announced each retiree’s name. Dr. Travis L. Reeves, superintendent, and the other board of education members greeted each retiree as they came forward. Each person received a certificate, a personalized clock, and a lifetime pass to all regular season Surry County Schools sporting events.

Reeves concluded the program with these comments, “It has been a great night. I am happy to share this evening with you where each of you have received the recognition you deserve for excellence in achievement in Surry County Schools. Thank you, retirees and family members, for taking time from your busy schedules to celebrate with us this evening. We wish you a wonderful retirement filled with time to enjoy family, friends, and all those activities you have kept for this special time. We look forward to seeing you back on our campuses at sporting events. We also hope you will consider volunteering in our schools! Enjoy this new journey of your life. Cherish every moment and have fun!”

The lighthearted song, “Do What You Want to Do,” was the final performance by Norman that ended the night with laughter.
