More than 50 Surry County students were awarded scholarships from the Edward M. Armfield, Sr. Foundation on May 17 at Surry Community College’s Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology. Pictured are the scholarship recipients.

DOBSON — The Edward M. Armfield, Sr. Foundation presented scholarships to more than 50 Surry County students in a ceremony held on May 17 at the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology on the campus of Surry Community College.

Students, their parents, and school administrators from Surry County, Mount Airy City and Elkin City school systems joined Surry Community College representatives who recognized the outstanding achievements of the scholarship recipients.

Chelsy Beverly Payne, an Armfield Scholarship alumnus and assistant principal at Tharrington Primary School, addressed the group sharing her gratitude to the Armfield Foundation for its part in helping her pursue educational and career goals. In addition, Armfield Foundation President E. Bedford Cannon and Executive Director Mindy Oakley gave words of congratulation and encouragement to the scholarship recipients.

Dr. Randy Bledsoe, superintendent of Elkin City Schools; Dr. Don Martin, interim superintendent of Mount Airy City Schools; Dr. Travis Reeves, superintendent of Surry County Schools; and Dr. David Shockley, president of Surry Community College, participated in the scholarship awards to their respective students as follows:

Elkin High School: Carolyn Blackburn, Matthew Cudd, Tyler Eaton, Ethan Mastin, McKenna Major, Hunter Simmons, Matthew Waddell and Miracle Walters.

Mount Airy High School: Mathew Eads, Rachel Evans, Madeline Gammons, Walker Hall, Keara Halpren, Jack McCluskey, Emily Snow, Griffin Spencer and William Zeller.

East Surry High School: Christopher Brooks, Ben Chilton, Samuel Guy, Bethany Hewett, Meredith Jessup, Staymon Johnson, Blake Marion, Alayna Speer, and Cora Tucker.

North Surry High School: Justin Angel, Bailey Atkins, Andrew Cave, Amy Cockerham, Elijah Combs, Brittany Gagne, Alex Jones, Keaton Massey and John Smith.

Surry Central High School: Hugh Atkinson, Kaitlyn Brewer, Kellie Brown, Robert Cochran, Jess Fowler, Marissa Fowler, Katelyn Jones, Hayley Miller, Meredith Pack and Ally Pratt.

Surry Early College High School and Surry Community College: Sydney Dockery, Cheltsea Golding, Jakob Holt, Vanessa Ibarra, Katherine Knight, Maggie Riggans, Janet Snow, and Hunter Woodie.
