On Feb. 25, Rotary District 7690 held its annual Four Way Test high school speech contest at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown. Students presented speeches aimed at their fellow students using Rotary’s Four Way test as a guideline for a lifetime of ethical behavior.

Rotary’s Four Way Test states:

Of the things we think, say, or do

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The students were asked to make a speech addressed to their classmates on how the Four Way Test can be used to make ethical decisions in their lives.

Fifteen students participated in the District Competition. The winners of the 2017 District Contest were:

• 1st Place – Ellie Chandler of Pinecrest High School, sponsored by the Southern Pines Rotary Club.

• 2nd Place – Alexis Berg of Wesleyan Christian Academy, sponsored by the High Point Club.

• 3rd Place – Ansen Eldred of GTCC Middle College, sponsored by the Jamestown Club.

• 4th Place – Jessica Hardison of Southwest Randolph High School, sponsored by the Randolph Club.

• 5th Place – Jacquez Johnson of Thomasville High School, sponsored by the Thomasville Club.

Other participants were:

• Connor Black of Sandhills Classical Christian School, sponsored by the Pinehurst Club.

• Caleb Cooke of North Surry High School, sponsored by the Mount Airy Club.

• Samantha Cranford of West Montgomery High School, sponsored by the Troy Club.

• Brandy Fuentes-Delgado of Elkin High School, sponsored by the Yadkin Valley Club.

• Jaretzy Hernandez of Davie County Early College, sponsored by the Mocksville Club.

• Sophia Holt of Western Alamance High School, sponsored by the Alamance Club.

• Anna Ilyasova of Mount Airy High School, sponsored by the Mount Airy Club.

• Sarah Kocher of Randleman High School, sponsored by the Asheboro Club.

• Thomas Pickett of Southern Guilford High School, sponsored by the Southern Guilford Club.

• Jewel Tillman of Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, sponsored by the Furnitureland Club.
