Four local schools will participate in the YMCA Bright Beginnings program on Saturday to help kids with back-to-school clothes, supplies, a pair of shoes and a haircut.
Joyce Hamby, membership director at the Yadkin YMCA, said the Bright Beginnings program helps kids feel confident by making their first day of school special.
Volunteers will gather to take 97 children from the elementary schools in Yadkin County shopping to purchase a new outfit and new shoes. They will receive school supplies and a book bag donated by volunteers and the community.
About 200 people total will participate, said Hamby.
Participating schools are West Yadkin Elementary, Jonesville Elementary, Yadkin Success Academy and Courtney Elementary School.
Hamby said the schools initially gave the participating students’ names and are allowing the YMCA to do the program.
Bright Beginnings is in its third year and continues to bring good community support, said Hamby.
“We want to get the children off to a great start for the school year, and it is a way to give them encouragement.”
During the Saturday schedule, volunteers will begin at 6:30 a.m.
They will gather at the Yadkin Family YMCA; then at 7 a.m., they will leave on school buses to pick up the kids at the elementary schools; at 8 a.m. they will arrive at Elkin Walmart, Shoe Show and Raffles.
