Social studies teacher Nicholas A. Tomlin will become part of the Elkin High School teaching staff and become head baseball coach and assistant football coach this fall.
Tomlin is relocating from North Iredell High School and brings with him, North Carolina National Guard experience as second lieutenant in the 145th Maintenance Squadron along with teaching and coaching experience.
Tomlin was also a C-130H3 flight engineer in Charlotte and jet engine mechanic.
His awards and decorations include: National Defense Medal, Air Expeditionary Medal, Longevity Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom, Humanitarian Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and Air Force Training Medal.
Military deployments include: Germany, Kuwait, Utah, Idaho and Puerto Rico.
Tomlin has worked with the Special Olympics and coached Little League football and baseball.
Elkin High School Principal Joel Hoyle said he is pleased with the “valuable experience” of Tomlin’s background and what he will bring to the high school.
Hoyle said his experience in the National Guard will lend strength in civics and history.
Tomlin received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Tomlin coached as head baseball coach at North Iredell High School beginning in 2011.
While teaching at Starmount High School from July 2009-2011, Tomlin was defensive coordinator of defensive backs in football. In June of 2002-2004, Tomlin was assistant football coach and junior varsity baseball coach at South Iredell High School.
