Surry Community College Basic Law Enforcement graduate Lance Edward Richardson recently received the Greg Martin Award and the Max Blackburn Award.

The Greg Martin award honors the memory of Sgt. Martin of the Jonesville Police Department.

Martin was a BLET graduate from SCC and killed in the line of duty. The Greg Martin Award recipient is selected by a class vote when students elect whom they would most want as a backup officer on a serious call.

Chief Roger Reece of the Jonesville Police Department said it shows that the students feel the safest with him and would be the most comfortable with him in the line of duty.

Reece said he does not know Richardson personally. Apparently though, said Reece, Richardson excelled in all he did in classroom activities and that is why they picked him as a recipient.

“For the Jonesville Police Department and the community they serve, it keeps Martin’s name alive.”

Reece added that he feels sure for the Martin family to have his name continued in that way and in that magnitude is an honor.

Max Blackburn established the BLET program at SCC. The Max Blackburn award honors that fact. BLET instructors vote for students who demonstrate the most positive attributes of a law enforcement officer to receive the award.
