Blackburn wins essay contest
At a recent meeting of the Yadkin Valley Rotary Club, five students from Elkin High School competed in the Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest. The contest is held each year and students compete for local prizes and an opportunity to go to Regional and State contests for additional awards.
The winner was Carolyn Blackburn whose talk was timely and discussed the dilemma teenagers have in trying to understand the conflict between the federal law against the use of drugs and the Justice Department decision not to enforce their own law in Colorado and Washington regarding the use of recreational marijuana.
Blackburn will compete in the regional competition in Jamestown later this month.
The contestants were: senior Piper Lewis; junior Jay Blackburn; sophomores Reid Turner, Tyler Eaton and Carolyn Blackburn; and freshman Cameron Beals. All are members of the Interact Club at Elkin High.
Thoughtful, informative and inspiring were words that Rotarians used to describe the presentations.
