A downtown Elkin pastry shop will no longer dough it out.

Main Street Pastry, a small family-owned bakery located at 209 E. Main St., posted a sign on its front door two weeks ago citing they could not open because of health reasons.

However, its proprietor, Mitzi Jenkins Brickey, said she made a decision to throw in the towel and close the place for good.

“I gave it a shot. I tried my best. I thought the area was going to be a hit, but it was too much on me,” said Brickey.

“It causes a lot of stress,” she said. “Worrying about what days to open, your hours, and where the money will come from is tough. It did get to a point that I was beginning to throw away a lot of product because people were just not around to buy them.”

Once packed with the sweet smell of fresh eclairs, cream puffs, cake balls and an assortment of cupcakes, the property owner didn’t waste time placing a “for rent” sign on the door.

“The space is for rent. The business can’t stay open. It was their decision,” said a spokeswoman for property owner, Evan Vestal.

Main Street Pastry was the first of three bakeries that opened in 2013 within a three-block radius in downtown Elkin. The pastry shop was the first to open and the first to go out of business.
